Message from the President

Over the past few weeks there have been some discussions between the NJ Club and NYC Club to join forces and form a NJ/NY Regional Club.  This past month, Kris Lakshmanan and I visited the NYC Club during one of their meetings and joined in the discussion as this idea was formally presented to their board. We are happy to say that the NYC Club has fully embraced the idea, along with us.  So what does this mean? Why are we doing this?

It means that as a member of the NJ Club, all activities that are being held and run by the NYC Club will be open to you to actively participate, and they can do the same in NJ.  We realize a lot of NJ Club members live and work near NYC.  In the past, this has caused confusion about which event they should attend, or if they could attend those events.  Same goes true with NYC Club members who live in NJ, but weren’t sure about attending events here.   In the event of a big event, we will be able to pool resources to make that event as successful as possible.  Recently Archie Griffin visited both NJ and NYC during a trip to the East Coast to talk about Ohio State.  The NJ event was ultimately cancelled due to lack of signups, and we hope to eliminate situations like that in the future.  In the end, you will be a member of your respective Club – NJ or NYC along with the NJ/NYC Regional Club and possibly in the future CT Clubs and will be able to attend events there as well.

We need your help on this and are looking for a few volunteers who will be able to meet  in August and beyond  to help us hammer out the details on how this will take place, club logistics and other matters that need to be handled before we go forward.  The First meeting is schedule to take place in early Aug, most likely in Newark, as it central to both clubs, future meetings may take place in NYC or a location in NJ.  If you are available and would like to help, we would love to have you.  Please e-mail me at laser110@aol.com and let me know your interest.

I am looking forward to meeting many of you at event this year and game watches this fall.

Go Bucks!!

Scott

Meet Richard Della Rovere, Vice President of the OSU Club of NJ

I want to thank you for electing me Vice President of the OSU Alumni Club of NJ this year.  The experiences and friendships we all had at Ohio State established strong ties and make us want to stay permanently connected to and involved with the place.  I met my future wife Nancy in the dorm (Morrill Tower) when we were sophomores.  We married a year later when we were both juniors.  We lived in married student housing (Neilwood Gables off of Woodruff) until we both graduated in 1976.  And wouldn’t you know it, her roommate married my roommate.  We still keep in touch with them.  They visited us in Manhattan last year.  My daughter was born at University Hospital with a view of, what was at that time, the open end of Ohio Stadium.  Needless to say, she is very fond of the Ohio State University.  So our lives have in some ways become entwined with the University and lifelong ties have been established.

My interest in the Club is in working with all of you to strengthen our ties to the Ohio State University and with each other with an eye toward assuring that Ohio State continues to be one of the best places in America and the world to attend college and to do research.

As Scott Himowitz our President has stated, the Ohio State University is a lot more than football.

Best regards,

Richard Della Rovere

Big Ten Alumni Day Report

I attended Big 10 Day in Lake Como at the Jersey Shore last June 25 and wanted to give you a brief report.  Lake Como (formerly South Belmar) is right next to Belmar a Jersey Shore hot spot.  Bar-Anticipation, where the event was held, is in a good location and easy to get to off the GS Parkway.  There was plenty of off-street parking.  The Bar-A is a large compound made up of different inter-connected venues of outdoor bars and cafes, covered cabanas and barbecuing areas arranged around an indoor club.  There was a grotto with a waterfall and wading pool and a grassy area with tables and chairs for lounging.  There were also three full size outdoor beach volleyball courts inside the compound.  I was impressed.  There was a big turn-out; I would guess about 100 people.   It appeared that most of the attendees were Penn State and Michigan alumni, although I also met alumni from Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona State, Cornell and Seton Hall.  It was interesting.  Since I was the only Buckeye there, I was the center of attention of some of the Penn State and Michigan alumni (you can imagine) who teased a little about the Coach Tressel situation.  They were otherwise very friendly.  Everyone seemed to have a good time.  The organizers (Penn State and Wisconsin alumni clubs of NJ) want to make Big 10 day an annual event.  I think this will be good for maintaining interclub relations which helps all clubs.  They said they would keep us in the loop for next year.

Regards,

Richard

We need volunteers to help with game watches, our incoming freshman picnic, updating the Club By-laws and Constitution, and other events throughout the year.  Contact us through our web page www.njbuckeyes.com if you can help.

Membership

Why join the NJ Buckeyes Alumni Club?

Woody would say you have to “pay forward" because it's impossible to pay back, especially to a University that has given so much.  Les Wexner recently said “But for Ohio State” when he pledged a $100 million gift to the University.  Hundreds of thousands Alumni have millions of reasons.  For me it’s friends, memories, pride, respect, love and an acknowledgment that my days at OSU were “life defining.”

How do you remember your days at OSU?  What credit should the University get for who you are today?  Isn’t it time to step back and repay a little of that? Our NJ Alumni Club strives to continue the camaraderie that began as freshmen.  We plan gatherings for NJ Buckeyes to meet and watch our Teams compete.  We attend numerous high school fairs to expose students and counselors to our great Institution.  We provide modest scholarships to NJ graduates going to OSU.  We have a wonderful summer send-off picnic for all the NJ students heading to Columbus in September.  We support a website, NJBuckeyes.com, to keep in constant communications with you.

We do all of this with a handful of dedicated Alumni and your annual membership dollars.  For just $25.00 per year (September to August), you can help to keep our efforts moving ahead.  Visit the website.  Send in your membership, using either PayPal or "snailmail."  Let us know what we can do to make the Club more meaningful to you.

Do you have something you want to share with your fellow Buckeyes? An Engagement, Wedding, Graduation, Promotion, etc?  Send us the info and we’ll include it in the next e-mail. If you have pictures include them as well.  Send you info to Jany at

A Special Thanks

Karen Athas recently e-mailed The Board to tell us she is leaving NJ and moving back to Columbus to be closer to her daughters, and family.  Karen has been an instrumental part of The Club for many years serving as the leader for our game watch at The Fox and Hound Pub week after week and organizing our yearly Beat M-ch-gan Bash.  Karen has often delighted attendees with her homemade Buckeye Candies and cheerful demeanor. She can often be heard yelling out O-H  during the game to help cheer on and up the local Buckeyes when we need it.  Karen is a special asset to The Club and will be missed.  We wish her good luck in Columbus.
